Influence of Star Trek: DS9 on Television
io9.com has posted an interesting article that looks at what might have been the influence of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on the television of today. While it is possible TV writers and creators so not know it, but many of the conventions we are use too in television was really done first by Star Trek: DS9. This includes season and series long story arcs (Bajor growing influence in the Federation, Dominion War, Kira's growth, list is long), "good" terrorists (aka the good guys we agree with doing destruction against a government we don't in this case Bajoran Resistance vs Cardassian Union), the enemy within (shapechangers, self destructive policies, etc.), divided loyalties (Odo's history), mismatched romantic pairings (Odo/Kira, Dax/Worf), and focus on religion (Bajor, the Prophets, etc.). At the time is just seemed like good television but now its everywhere, be it 24, Lost, Persons of Interest, Homefront, and so forth. Before then most prime time show's idea of a long arc was a two part episode or a guest star reprising a role for the second or so time. Glad I'm not the only one who feels this was the best Star Trek tv series. It was a great show. In fact the only thing I don't like about the new JJ Abrams Star Trek is that because it's so successful and so well done...well, we will probably never get a DS9 movie.
ReplyDeleteDS9 was a good series, but dont agree with the comments ref first on television. All you describe was already being done on Babylon 5 - which story wise, was far superior to DS9.
ReplyDeleteBabylon 5 had boring unteresting characters and was visually bland. Superior is hardly a word used to describe it.
