SDCC: Orci, Lindelof Provide Sequel Update

In two separate interviews at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, Star Trek sequel writers Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof discussed the progress of Star Trek 12. Orci spoke with Hotflix where there was a video of the interview but that isn't working so TrekMovie posted a transcript of the highlights.

The main pieces of information from Orci is once JJ Abrams recovers from making and promoting JJ Abrams an announcement will be made on Star Trek. Paramount has heard the pitch for the sequel story and signed off on it. Orci also indicated there might be a tweak to the design of the Enterprise, specifically with the interior so can see new sections of the ship.

In multiple different interviews while at SDCC, collected by TrekMovie, Damon Lindelof provided his own input on the movie's progress. The movie has officially moved from the outline phase to the scripting phase but no news if a shooting script has been developed. JJ Abrams has not yet decided if he will direct and the goal is "we want it to be awesome and better than the first one."

I think the window to get the movie out next summer has closed unless the script allows movie crew to pull some amazing rabbits out of their hats. I suspect that an announcement will be made that the film will not make its release date. The question then becomes if this will result in a year delay to summer 2013 or just six months to Christmas 2012. Personally I think they should shoot for mid-November to Thanksgiving but I bet kicking off the summer movie season with an early May 2013 release will be the period the studio settles on.
