Abrams Confirms CBS Remains Uninterested in New Star Trek Series

Once again JJ Abrams was asked about the chances of a new Star Trek TV series and once again he basically replied with a no. Screenrant reports he said, "I have been hearing for as long as I can remember that CBS, who has the rights to the series, has just been saying they’re not interested. That’s the word I’ve been told."

Abrams is referring to CBS Television Studios which owns the rights to Star Trek and would be the ones that would produce any Star Trek series. CBS did reply to his comment saying "We love the Star Trek franchise, its fan base and the many possibilities for its future when the time is right." In short, they are saying not right now and no idea when.

Star Trek 3 Probably Get a Budget Cut

A new article from The Hollywood Reporter suggests that studios are going to attempt to do some belt tightening on their mega films after the multiple near failures they experienced this Summer. Moves that could impact the budget and locations for Star Trek 3. It used to be that a $200+ million dollar film would at minimum break even under most circumstances but that is no longer the case after The Lone Ranger, RIPD, After Earth, White House Down and host of other expensive movies failed to meet expectations. Rather then blame an entirely too crowded Summer schedule that probably broke the budget of the average family of four (or even one), the lesson the studio's learned seems to be spend around 20% less to make each movie.

Star Trek Enterprise Season Three Blu-ray Details

CBS Home Entertainment has released the full details for Star Trek: Enterprise - Season Three Blu-ray six-disc set that will be coming out on January 7th, 2014. For some inexplicable reason they are skipping the holiday buying season but the box set does seem worthwhile for fans. Besides the HD presentation, the season set includes a new 3-part "In A Time of War" documentary that looks back at the season, a look at the Temporal Cold War (cool idea, poorly implemented in the series as held their cards a bit too close), new commentaries and more. Amazon has the set available for pre-order.

Rumor: Joe Cornish To Direct Star Trek 3

Deadline is reporting that director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) might be tapped to direct Star Trek 3. Their source is unknown and Paramount has not commented on the rumor so for now it falls in the grain of salt category. The director also co-wrote Marvel's Ant-Man and The Adventures of Tintin. I saw Attack the Block but really little about it stuck with me as being impressive so difficult to make a call on if the choice would be a wise one or not. It would definitely be a new voice to the franchise which might help bring back that exploration of the unknown while exploring the human condition that the previous action films have lacked. Time will tell as always with rumors like these.
