Star Trek: The Next Generation Film Collection in 4K Ultra HD Announced

Paramount Home Video has announced that upcoming release of the Star Trek: The Next Generation 4K Ultra HD Collection on April 4th, 2023. The TNG films of Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Resurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis have been converted to 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision and HDR-10. The set is 8 discs - four in 4K Blu-Ray and four in remastered Blu-Ray along with digital copy of each movie. If not interested in the collection, the movies will also be released individually. The Roddenberry Vault Blu-ray Set Out Now

If you are a fan of Star Trek: The Original Series, you might want to considering against The Roddenberry Vault Blu-ray set. The vault presents episodes of select TOS episodes with alternate takes, deleted scenes, music only tracks and new commentaries. Basically its a treasure trove of behind the scenes footage and more. Star Trek Beyond Home Video Release Date

The official release date of Star Trek Beyond for home video has been announced. The movie will come out in the usual array of combo packs and special additions on November 1, 2016. You can also buy it early digitally on October 4 but considering the price of a digital copy is the same as the hard copy that comes with a digital code, you get more bang for your buck by waiting (and can sell off the hard copy to recoup some cost if so desire).

The special features include deleted scenes, gag reel, behind the scenes featurettes on aspects of the movie including the characters, sets, special effects and more. There is also a look back at 50 years of Trek along with the unfortunate passing of Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. The full details can be found here.

Star Trek Beyond Blu-ray USS Franklin Gift Set Pre-Order Available

Even though the very entertaining movie is still in theaters, the home video release of the movie is already available for pre-order. No details on the special features have been announced nor has the release date but if they are prepping this early then it will likely be in November or early December to take advantage of Christmas sales. The main reason you may want to look into the pre-order is the Quantum Mechanix mini-masters ship of the USS Franklin (the ship the crew use to escape the planet). Until recently I was only aware of QM for its crazy expensive but beautiful re-creations of Star Trek ships.

The Franklin is part of an Amazon exclusive $50 gift set that will include the ship and the 4K + 3D + Blu-ray combo. Deal wise its basically what the retail value of each would be if they were sold separately but personally I liked the mini-ship enough to make it worth pre-ordering and hope the price drops by the time its released. Star Trek 50th Anniversary Blu-ray Set Announced

Set for release on September 6, 2016 is the Star Trek 50th Anniversary Blu-ray that is focused on The Original Series crew. The set includes all three remastered seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series (same as previously released seasons), Star Trek: The Animated Series remastered and released on Blu-ray for the first time ever, and the first six Star Trek movies. Most of the special features are identical to what was released with the blu-ray versions before but there are a few new additions. The full details are in the press release below. Star Trek: Wrath of Khan Director's Cut Blu-ray Out June 7

Paramount has revealed the release date of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Director's Cut Blu-ray as June 7, 2016. Until now the only available version of the director's cut was for a DVD release years ago. The main distinction is this release is a remastered 1080p transfer of the film so it should provide for the best look yet for this venerated film. The Blu-ray contains nearly the same extra features and commentary from the regular and director's DVD releases but does add a new making of called "The Genesis Effect: Engineering The Wrath of Khan". Paramount Chooses Abrams' Star Trek for Its First 4K Release

For Star Trek fans with the right TVs and equipment, Paramount has announced its very first Blu-ray release in 4K Ultra HD as Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness. The two titles will go on sale on June 14th for $47.99 each.which is also the 50th anniversary of the broadcast of the first Star Trek episode. The special features are essentially the same but one exception is Into Darkness will have the IMAX version of the film (I think the difference is mostly cosmetic as far as screen size, not different scenes).

Remastered Star Trek Series Box Sets Coming In June

CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount have announced they are releasing box sets of the remastered Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray. The TOS set had been released for DVDs but I do believe this 20-disc set is a first for Blu-ray. As for Star Trek: The Next Generation, this will be the recently just completed seasons that including cleaning up the footage, tweaking the special effects and more. That will be getting the box set release in Blu-ray (41 discs) and a re-release of the non-enhanced show on DVD (48 discs). A few more details can be found here but there is no exact release date. The estimated price will be $99 for the TOS Blu-ray set and TNG will be $209 (Blu-ray).

Star Trek: The Next Generation Remaster on Netflix

If it has been awhile since you saw an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and do not already own the Blu-ray season conversions, then this might be the time to give your Netflix subscription a workout as the HD remastered versions of the episodes are now streaming on the service which include additional bug fixes to a few episodes that fans noticed from the initial release. Sadly the sales did not meet CBS Entertainment's expectations so there are no plans for a Blu-ray or remaster release release of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or Star Trek: Voyager. Chances are that this will probably be the last real (not rumor) TV related news for the foreseeable future as CBS has made it clear that outside of licensing, they genuinely see zero future potential in the Star Trek franchise outside of Paramount's movies.

Star Wars Getting Steelbook Treatment

Star Wars is getting another Blu-ray release in time for Christmas by re-packaging the Blu-ray release from a few years ago into Steelbooks with character heads for covers. From what I can tell these are the same editions as those previous releases but missing most of their extra features except for audio commentary. The Complete Saga is also getting repackaged but not clear if its in a steelbook or not. The new editions will get released on October 13th minus the "Episode #" designation which is probably the strongest indication yet that Disney is planning to drop the numbering entirely with The Force Awakens.

Do Not Buy Star Trek: The Compendium

The reason that Paramount released a crappy blu-ray edition of Star Trek Into Darkness last year is official out now. The Star Trek: The Compendium is a four disc total set with 2009's Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. The '09 Star Trek is the identical Blu-ray set that has been available for years while while Into Darkness is what the initial release last year should have been before Paramount stripped-mined its extra features as retailer exclusives. They did that because they knew this addition was waiting in the pipeline. So basically this "new" set is an attempt to force fans to buy the exact same movies set twice rather then a way of trying to get new fans on board (or go Lord of the Rings/Hobbit with genuine new content that cost a pretty penny to put together like the Extended Editions).

If you followed my advise last year and avoided buying Into Darkness then this could be your reward with its 20 extra features including what I understand to be an excellent commentary (which last year was an iTunes exclusive). However, Paramount WILL do this again with more of their movies and then the rest of the studios will copy them. As a result it is in your best interest as a movie fan (as this really isn't a Star Trek issue) is make it clear to Paramount that this is unacceptable. The only way you can do that is to speak with your wallet by keeping it closed. As a result I once again recommend - Do Not Buy. However, if you insist on doing it and plan on buying from Amazon, click here so this site gets credit.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 7 Trailer

Below is the first trailer for Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 7. No details yet on extra features but expect it to follow the same format as the others with lots of new featurettes, interviews, and a documentary.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6 Blu-Ray Out Now

Starting today Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6 Blu-ray set along with Chain of Command "movie" is now available to purchase. As with previous releases, the season 6 set is remastered in HD with improved surround sound using the original film with improved special effects that still match the look and feel of the series. Chain of Command takes the two part episode and edits it together as one feature length movie with its own special features. Trailer below. Star Trek: The Compendium Announced But Do Not Buy

And the other shoe drops. The reasons behind Paramount releasing a crappy home video version of Star Trek Into Darkness (whose tactics forced me to recommend no one buy the movie) has become clear with the announcement of Star Trek: The Compendium Blu-ray set. The 4-disc set covers both JJ Abrams Trek movies and add new content for the first Star Trek movie while combining all the retailer exclusive content for Star Trek Into Darkness. The box set will retail for $39.99 but likely be cheaper when released on September 9, 2014.

I actually love the ideas and extra's included in this set but sadly I have to again recommend that you do not buy it. The reason is simple - do not reward bad behavior. This set should have been released last year with Star Trek Into Darkness but Paramount waited a year to maximize sales at the expense of fans. If this is a commercial success the only lesson Paramount will learn is they should force as many double-dip situations as possible and it could lead to other studios following their example. Its one thing to sorta be forced into it because of format changes and major anniversaries where a genuine effort was made to create new content for a special release but this is none of that. It is clear the Paramount Home Video department made the decision to hold back and segregate content as "retailer exclusives" knowing this was coming later and not telling anyone. After all why risk hurting sales for those willing to wait for the better set? It should not be rewarded and that means you should not buy this or anything move copy related to Star Trek Into Darkness. Details on Star Trek: Enterprise Season Four Blu-Ray

The final and sadly best season of Star Trek: Enterprise is hitting blu-ray on April 29th. After a teaser trailer last month we now have the full details on the special features for the set. While the first three seasons was one of mostly wasted potential, the final season was when it seems the writing staff finally figured out what the series should be but by then the damage was done. Features include a 90-minute piece with the series writing staff and new documentary about the end of the series along with new episode commentaries. Friendly FYI that Amazon has the remastered Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray season sets for an average of 65% off, which is the cheapest I have seen for them so far. Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6 Blu-ray Trailers

CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount have posted the trailer for the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6 Blu-ray set and "movie" that will be released soon (no exact release date yet). As with the previous set, it will have a new HD transfer with updated special effects (that still fit the shows looks and feel of the time) along with a bunch of new extra features. The 26 episode season is considered on of the best due to memorable episodes such as "Chain of Command" (Picard tortured by a Cardassian), Relics (Montgomery Scott on the Enterprise-D), Tapestry, and more. As for Chain of Command, that two part episode will get the "movie" treatment as it is combined into a "seamlessly edited feature-length" presentation much like previous two-parters from the other season complete with its own special features. Star Trek: Enterprise Season Four Coming in April

CBS Home Entertainment has released a teaser for the upcoming release of the final season of Star Trek: Enterprise on Blu-ray. The set is scheduled to come out on April 29th and will include all 22 episodes of the series. It will also include new commentaries, deleted scenes, and outtakes. New featurettes include the four part "Before Her Time: Decommissioning Enterprise" documentary and "In Conversation: Writing Star Trek Enterprise" with the staff of the series. I love Trek, but frankly none of the Enterprise sets interested. At least until this one. Season four was when the series finally reached its true potentially, telling stories that everyone wanted Trek to tell from the very first episode which was to explain some of the origins the universe we all loved while still continue to "Explore strange new worlds." The series wanted to be dark when it should have just been a fun adventure in the vein of The Original Series with the occasional filling of gaps (like it did finally getting into the meat of the founding of the Federation). Not all the ideas were good nor all bad but over all the fourth was probably the funnest and closest to what Star Trek should be - fun adventure that explores the human condition through allegory.
