I am not entirely sure what is up with today as now have three Star Trek 3 stories after weeks of nothing worth writing about for anything Star Trek. Karl Urban spoke some ST3 truth, Orci & Kurtzman are back as writers and now we have a director rumor. According to the Latino Review, G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu is a top choice for taking the helm for Star Trek 3. Other rumored choices include Justin Lin (Fast and Furious films), and Brad Bird (Mission: Impossible 4). The Latino Review is hit or miss at best so this remains grain of salt but considering Paramount efforts to pump up the action in the Trek films, this would fit in their agenda.
Of the three rumored choices, my first pick would be Brad Bird who has a proven record of nailing action and creating fantastic character moments in a strong story (see The Incredibles and The Iron Giant). The problem with the two Trek movies has not been the action side but the weak characterization combined with a gimmick filled plots. A good director can help force script writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to potentially rise to the occasion or at least create those moments from the blueprint they provide. Nothing against Chu, but his record (so far) doesn't indicate he will be able to do that.

Not excited by any of these choices. It IS time for exploration and new ideas though. Originality a must.
