From the writer Mike Johnson:
"We're getting away from the sort of paradigm of you roll up to a planet, something weird happens, [you] get in trouble, you've got to the solve the problem. This is more throwing all of the characters into new situations. They're not all going to be together. We're going to follow multiple threads of the characters as they each encounter new situations."

"[It's] more the change in the status quo is because of what happens in 'Beyond' to our beloved Starship Enterprise," he explained. "So their five-year mission was rudely interrupted by the events of the movie, and as we open 'Boldly Go,' we're dealing with the fallout from that. It's safe to say you're not going to see the Enterprise right away."

"We're going to be introducing some new characters -- both Starfleet and otherwise -- that Tony had the chance to design. We've never met these folks before. And Tony has, as usual, done a brilliant job at not only bringing to life the characters as we know them, but adding new things and building out this timeline, which is really what the goal of the comics has always been," he added.

"I will say that the villain that we're bringing in for 'Boldly Go' is definitely one that I've wanted to work with since I started," he teased. "We finally get the chance to do it, and I think fans are going to be really excited when they see who it is. And it's not Khan. It's not unfrozen Cumberbatch!"
It will be interesting to see how the post movie status quo is handled as something like introducing a new Enterprise would be saved for Star Trek 4 so writers will have to spend the next two years telling stories that involve the crew of the Enterprise while they are likely spread all over Starfleet until a new ship of the line is built.
