Star Trek 4 Gets Officially Greenlit

Despite Star Trek Beyond still five days from release and a rather bloody summer of failed tent pole movies, Paramount and Bad Robot have announced they have greelit Star Trek 4. The plot is described as " Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father. "

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) will reprise the role of George Kirk that he played in the 2009 movie. Considering his stardom has risen considerably since then it is safe to assume he will have a major role in the film. Most of the Enterprise cast already have agreements for the fourth film. Exactly how the pair will meet had not been revealed but it's Star Trek so options include time travel, mind games, or even the Mirror Universe version of the character. The script will be written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin will not be back to helm the film, so the director role is in flux. Jan Abrams will remain Executive Producer but is not expected to direct the film. Basically by announcing this so early, Paramount is showing a lot of confidence in Star Trek 3 which might goose sales while at the same time potentially reducing the gap between films to just two years.
