Star Trek Panel Introduces New Series and More

Normally this weekend would be San Diego Comic-Con 2020 but thanks to Coronavirus it (and basically everything else) had to be cancelled. The alternative was to take advantage of Zoom and (mostly TV) celebs willingness to use it. Thus Comic-Con@Home 2020 was born. If you have never been to a Con, while it orbits around Comics, TV and Movies, it breath of subjects is quite wide ranging. So make sure to check out Comic-Con International's YouTube page as already there is a ton of videos that might grab your interest.

This brings us to Star Trek. In previous SDCC events, the Star Trek Universe Panel would be about 55 minutes long and be a careful dance of getting casts on stage and off so that each show could talk about their show. Now, the same thing is being done through Zoom with a probably pre-recorded meetup that was edited and then posted on the site. Considering that meant getting around 20 or so people that ended up participating across Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks together was quite accomplishment. All the shows were careful to avoid revealing any future plans (likely because that is still being figured out in a post-Corona world). The video below is worth watching if only to see Marina Sirtis have fun with Patrick Stewart where their decades long friendship meant she was not remotely interested in treating him with the same reverence the rest of the Picard cast holds for him. In additional, a scene from Lower Decks was shown along with the voice cast providing some insight on their characters.

At the start of the panel is the main bit of news - Star Trek: Prodigy. The Nickelodeon series is set to premiere in 2021. The show, from Trollhunters writers Kevin and Dan Hagemen, will "follow a group of rebellious teens who commandeer an old Starfleet ship and head off into the universe for adventure and more." Other details like setting, cast, characters, etc. were not revealed. Just the title and logo. Depending on how things go, 2021 is currently shaping up to be quite the year for Star Trek.
