At this point some thing the whole game is a bit silly since it impedes Abrams desire to make the film as open to non-Trek fans as possible. It is pretty much assumed he is playing a variation of Khan. A theory that I am inclined to stick with too if only when think like Hollywood (aka $$$), going with the villain even non-Trekkies know is worth more then one only the die hards might be familiar with. Pretty much Khan is only one that fits the bill. Below are the highlights and six videos from JJ Abrams, Benedict Cumberbatch (who doesn't actually deny Khan), Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto (who slips up with a Khan name drop in reference to Nero from 1st film) as they talk about the film.
Highlights:
- Abrams: "The whole thing, not just his backstory, but his agenda, his plan, his secret, all that is what, for me at least, makes him such a frightening and cool villain. Also, the real villains — when they’re not just two-dimensional, angry vengeful types — don’t see themselves as the bad guy. They are the good guy and have complete rationale and motivation. So true to form, the character that Benedict plays has an absolute sense of right and wrong, and he’s on the right side."
- Cumberbatch: "I play a character called John and not that other name. It's interesting. Speculation is speculation and that's all fun. I play John Harrison who's a terrorist and an extraordinary character in his own right," the Brit said. "He's somebody who is not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain. He's got an extraordinary purpose, and I hope that at one point or other in the film you might even sympathize with the reasons he's doing what he's doing -- not necessarily the means and the destruction he causes. But it was a great ride, not just because he's the bad guy and the antagonist but also because he has a purpose and it's hard not to see his point of view at certain points."
- Cumberbatch: "[John] has extraordinary physical powers, but also mental powers. He can sow an idea, which is as powerful as gunshots or close-hand combat, which he’s masterful in. He tears into the fabric of both the world and the Enterprise family, and he leaves behind him a trail of devastation. It’s quite exciting to watch."
- Pine on Carol Marcus: "So much happens, the action the plot, the current of it is so fast there really isn't much time for Kirk to do anything but save the crew. ...Kirk loves a blonde. Alice [Eve as Carol Marcus] is a beautiful woman. So the flirting and the connection is there. I'll leave it to the people who watch to see how far it goes. ...Her scientific knowledge and education plays a big part [in solving the crisis.]"
