Pine, Quinto Re-Up for Raise and Star Trek 4 as Star Trek 3 Nears Production Start Date

Star Trek 3 stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have signed contracts that give them significant raises for Star Trek Beyond while also locking the pair down for Star Trek 4. Chris Pine went from under $1 million for the second Trek to $6 million while the the raise for Quinto was not mentioned but The Hollywood Reporter estimates that raises added an additional $10 to $15 million to the film's budget. The news comes just as Quinto and Zoe Saldana recently posted images of them going to costume fittings and what may be the beginning of principle photography based on some reports. However Star Trek 3 producer David Ellison spoke with Collider and said "we start shooting in 10 days and we're shooting in Vancouver and Dubai." More likely set and costume prep has begun in Vancouver as it seems unlikely filming would begin now to just have to close up shop for the Fourth of July weekend so the week of July 6th start date is more credible.

I have to admit I am very surprised by Chris Pine signing on to another movie as he and Zoe Saldana just seemed to really begrudge being part of Star Trek. It always felt like they were going through the motions, faking their interest but really only interested in the higher profile it brought them and it was just a matter of the order they bolted once their 3 film contract ended. Of course part of Pine's re-up could be because his other movie attempts have all fallen way short of expectations as the two Star Trek films are his most successful films to date. Meanwhile Saldana has Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar 2 and 3 on the horizon. The article doesn't mention the state of her Trek 3 pay or a potential Trek 4 contract so I think its safe to assume she still has at least one foot out the door. Let's put it this way, if rumors start of a character death, I am just going to assume its hers (and nope no such rumor current exists and I am not trying to start one). Star Trek Beyond is set for release on July 8, 2016.

Orci Provides Star Trek 3 Updates, Quinto Ready for Next Film

Two minor updates on the Star Trek 3 front, one from Roberto Orci via Collider and another from actor Zachary Quinto (Spock) to IGN. Relevant quotes below but essentially Orci says the script is still being written and until its completed the film has not yet been officially greenlit and he has not officially signed on as director. Things will progress to official status once Paramount is pleased with the script. As for Quinto, he supported the choice of Orci as the director of Star Trek 3 and is looking forward to a story that takes place during the five-year mission.

Orci:
“Well, I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch. The studio has yet to even read the script. I’m in the middle of writing it, with the talented team of [John D.] Payne and [Patrick] McKay. They are true Star Trek fans, as well. So, I can’t even think anything about the future until I give them a script and they greenlight it. Until that happens, everything else is just a rumor.”

Star Trek 3 Shooting Next Year?

While at the 2013 Galway Film Festival, Star Trek's Zachary Quinto was asked about Star Trek 3 and provided an interesting answer.
Star Trek 3 should be filming, I suppose, next year. It’s going to be made a lot quicker than the last one. That’s the plan, although nothing is confirmed yet.
To be honest I think this is just a guess on Quinto's part. It strikes me as too early but I am not dismissing it either. I do believe Paramount wants a third Trek film but only reason to start filming in 2014 is for a release date sometime in 2015. I really don't see Paramount shooting for a 2015 they probably do not want to be anywhere near the release of Star Wars Episode VII in Summer 2015. This works out nicely with assumption the studio will want to have something for the 50th anniversary of the franchise which is in 2016 despite the three year delay it creates. Thanks to Ghola for the link.

More Star Trek Into Darkness Cast Interviews

Star Trek Into Darkness has premiered in North America but that doesn't mean the marketing campaign stops. In an interview with Collider, STID producer Bryan Burk discussed editing the film, screening the film while maintaining secrecy, easter eggs and a whole lot more including other Bad Robot projects like the various TV shows from this season and next. Simon Pegg remains the example on how to do interesting interviews as he seems to just cause interviewees to ask better questions rather then the generic ones Pine and the rest tend to get. In his interview with Collider, he was in a blunt mood as he talked about maintaining film secrecy, his dislike of people dinging Abrams about his lens flares, and talked provided a few behind the scene antedotes. As for Karl Urban, he talks about trying to add more to McCoy then just sarcasm, film themes, the costumes and more. Alice Eve discusses how her character has a British accent, deleted scene and more. The links to the interviews are below.

The Spocks Amusing Audi Commercial

A new commercial released by Audi focuses on Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy who both are forever known as Spock. The amusing video plays off the Spock background along with a few antedotes from Nimoy's past like his Big Bad Bilbo song. Worth a few for any Trek fan.

Into Darkness Cast Discuss Movie at CinemaCon

While at CinemaCon being held in Las Vegas, various cast members of Star Trek Into Darkness and writer Damon Lindelof discussed the film before and after an 18 minute preview of the film. Highlights from the videos are below which can be found here here. In a separate video, John Cho (Sulu) discussed the film with Collider. You can find that video here.

Highlights:
- Zachary Quinto: "It is an erroneous notion that [Spock] doesn’t have an emotional life. "Spock’s journey in this film is learning how to honor that emotional life."
- Chris Pine on Kirk: "He is a man who has to learn to censor himself at times and our bad guy–John Harrison–basically levels this mirror in front of Kirk in which he sees all of his vulnerabilities and his fallibility and everything that is wrong with the way he leads his men and women into battle–and he brings him to his knees."

More from Trek Cast on Sequel's Big Bad

On the eve of the new Star Trek Into Darkness trailer, JJ Abrams and some of the cast of the film continue to talk about the big bad of the film as played by Benedict Cumberbatch. While he is being called John Harrison, few seem to believe that is the one and only name the character will have in the film.

At this point some thing the whole game is a bit silly since it impedes Abrams desire to make the film as open to non-Trek fans as possible. It is pretty much assumed he is playing a variation of Khan. A theory that I am inclined to stick with too if only when think like Hollywood (aka $$$), going with the villain even non-Trekkies know is worth more then one only the die hards might be familiar with. Pretty much Khan is only one that fits the bill. Below are the highlights and six videos from JJ Abrams, Benedict Cumberbatch (who doesn't actually deny Khan), Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto (who slips up with a Khan name drop in reference to Nero from 1st film) as they talk about the film.

Quinto on Conan with New "Clip"

Zachary Quinto was on Conan Monday night and while there he followed in the footsteps of JJ Abrams by revealing...absolutely nothing about Star Trek Into Darkness. Instead it was a short gag with Quinto in bad Spock ears in front of a green screen. Hopefully some goodies to get excited about will be revealed next Friday with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Since it is Conan, what starts as groan becomes amusing. The bit is below.

Quinto "Fulfilled" by Star Trek 2 Experience

While at The Wrap's Short Film Festival, Zachary Quinto (Spock) spoke with the website about his experience working on the film. As usual no specifics provided. Quote below, video after.
"It was bigger. It was bolder, I think, than the first one, and that was pretty big and bold from my stand point. I’m really excited to see what they do with it. I feel like, you know, my work is done on the movie right now and until we have to go and promote it, then my work remains done and I let J.J. and his incredible team of people get in there and do the work that they need to do now. I feel very fulfilled, but I don't feel particularly attached to what the outcome of that project will be because I have faith in the people that I was collaborating with to make it as good as it can be."

Alice Eve on Trek Set Pic

A new picture has surfaced on the Zachary Quinto Community site that shows Alice Eve, unknown person and Quinto posing while on a Star Trek set. When and where the photo was taken is unknown. The main point of interest is the outfit suggests a little bit more info on the character she is playing. The main point of interest is the costumes seem to match the same dark gray and black uniforms that John Cho (Sulu) and Zoe Saldana (Uhura) wore for the film. The new darker scheme also matches outfits that Quinto and Chris Pine (Kirk) have worn. So this indicates a member of Starfleet (no likely not Dr. Carol Marcus). The outfit also suggests not a member of the medical corps (so bye Christine Chapel). Since she is wearing the costume but no alien makeup unlike Quinto, she is probably a human character. This fits my theory of Yeoman Janice Rand but there are still a host of contenders including Lt. Maria Givers who fell in love with Khan and helped in escape in The Original Series episode. As usual time will tell.

Star Trek Sequel Completes Principle Photography

Today JJ Abrams has completed filming Star Trek 2 (or 12) and now moves on to the post-production phase. The news was confirmed by TrekMovie when Trek writer Bob Orci wrote "And... That's a wrap!" Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto also confirmed the wrap via twitter. Pegg tweeted "Time to pull on the old work clothes and hit the coal face one more time..." with pic of his costume shirt while Quinto wrote "zq. picture wrap. holy shit" with pic of his set chair.

Filming occurred from January 12th to May 8th and as expected Abrams kept everything close to the vest. In theory after nearly five months of filming the only real leaks is Spock fighting Khan and Leonard Nimoy may reprise his role. And the costumes might involve a black shirt. So that covers a few minutes of the movie. The very first trailer will reveal more than the entire production did. Quite an impressive feat in secret keeping if think about it.

The film doesn't come out until May 17, 2013 so post-production will have plenty of time to perfect those lens flares. All kinds of works remains with editing, special effects, scoring, sound effects, ADR and host of other tasks that don't involve filming but will likely keep Abrams occupied through the rest of the year. For fans, hopefully the next bit of breaking news will come via the San Diego Comic-Con in July where Trek writer Damon Lindale had indicated a desire to present something for fans. It would be a good time to premiere a teaser trailer...

Major Star Trek Spoilers Confirmed

AICN is reporting that they have rumors of three major plot points for the Star Trek sequel that is currently filming. One was leaked yesterday, another was assumed but never officially verified and the last doesn't come as a surprise because of interviews with the writers over the last few years. TrekMovie later is saying these rumors have been confirmed through their sources. Consider this your SPOILER WARNING!

More Volcano Suit Set Pics

MSN UK and Digital Spy have posted more pictures of Zachary Quinto filming a scene in the Star Trek sequel. The other day a single image was posted but now more are available. He images show Quinto in his "Volcano Suit" (because of rumor the scene involves a volcano) but not a whole lot else. I guess technically its spoilerish but really a dude in costume in front of green screen could literally become anything. Hit the links above or click here to view all of them.

New Star Trek Set Photo

A new Star Trek set photo has popped up online. It shows Zachary Quinto hanging in some red space suit that seems like a cross between Iron Man and the space suit Kirk wore in the TOS episode The Tholian Web. The description with the photo says its a "Volcano Suit". Speculate away as no clue what this means as far as the movie goes.
Zachary Quinto as Spok filming an action scene for the Untitled Star Trek 2 Sequel. After first rehearsing the scene with a Spok Stunt Double Actor Zachary Quinto was then rigged to a wire in front of a large green screen and lifted to a height of 10 stories high then dropped at a high rate of speed as if he was falling. In the scene Spok is wearing a "Volcano Suit" and carrying an unknown piece of equipment with the Starfleet Emblem. A Volcano is somehow involved in this scene. The crew had a real fire burning off camera to catch the fire reflections on Spok's "Volcano Suit".

Quinto Talk Trek, Pine on Set Photos

Zachary Quinto briefly spoke with E! while at the Academy Awards about the sequel, once again avoiding any spoilers. In addition TrekMovie has posted three images from the set that show Chris Pine, Quinto, and Zoe Saldana on the set. The most "Trek" the pics get is a good look at a Spock ear.
"What you guys are going to see has yet to be solidified, decided [and] defined and that's the great part about working with someone who is so mind-bogglingly talented as J.J. Abrams," Quinto told me at the Oscars.

"It's been a really overwhelming schedule, but in all the right ways," Quinto said, adding, "I love to work hard and I'm certainly doing that right now."

Star Trek 2 Spock Whupping Set Video

J.J. Abrams was upset when just a few set pictures leaked, I wonder how he will feel about a video posted on SplashNews that provides more details of the same Spock vs. bad guy fight. It shows Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch doing a few takes of a fight between the two characters. Well really the segment being shot just shows Spock getting a beat down. As the voice points out, Vulcans have superior strength to humans (reiterated in the Spock vs. Kirk fight in the first movie) so for the big bad to hold his own and then some indicates he is either a genetically enhanced human (aka a Khan-like character) or an alien in human disguise.
