Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Casts James T. Kirk

The Paramount+ continuation of the Star Trek Universe has found its new Captain James T. Kirk. Paul Wesley (The Vampire Diaries) has been cast in the iconic role for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for its second season. The first season of the show will premiere in May.

The image shows the actor sporting his Captain look but exact nature of the story remains unknown considering the series takes place about 10 years before Kirk is promoted to Captain and given the Enterprise.  He isn't the only original series Enterprise crew member re-cast for this current era of the franchise with Spoke (Ethan Peck), Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) also in the show.

The casting comes William Shatner approved via a tweet saying ""Keep my ship and crew safe, Captain! 😉 Congratulations!" as a reply Paul Wesley's tweets on the casting. Wesley writing "I am deeply humbled and still a little startled to have been given the honor of playing the inimitable James T Kirk. Ever since I was a kid, I have been awed by the imaginative world Gene Roddenberry created. Recently, I boarded a flight to LA to discover that the man in the empty seat beside me was the one and only William Shatner, having himself just returned from space. I could barely put two words together but ultimately I managed to say hello and we chatted. I’m not one who usually believes in fate but this was more than a coincidence. And of course I had to get a picture. So thanks Mr. Shatner for the good company. And for seating us together, my thanks to the great bird in the sky. Can’t wait for all of you to see our Captain Kirk on your screens."
