Eight Spoilers from Star Trek Into Darkness

Monday Paramount Pictures held a press event at Bad Robot's Headquarters in Santa Monica, California. On hand was JJ Abrams and a few cast members from Star Trek Into Darkness. The event was to help promote the teaser trailer (most screenings) and 9 minute preview (IMAX 3D only) that is coming out on December 14th with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. One of the spoilers was already revealed when Paramount revealed that the name of Benedict Cumberbatch's character is John Harrison. TrekMovie reveals 7 other spoilers including character names, locations and a few story tidbits.

1) Alice Eve is Carol Marcus
The beautiful short haired blonde in the teaser of the teaser is Lieutenant Carol Marcus. In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the character was a civilian scientist working on instantly terraforming planets and was the ex-girlfriend of Kirk in his Starfleet Academy days from which she has his son. In the movie she is a member of Starfleet and probably does not have a previous relationship (or son) with Kirk until getting on board the Enterprise.

Nightmare On Elm Street's Nancy Has Cameo in Star Trek

Hopefully Heather Langenkamp will not end up on the cutting room floor for daring to reveal that she has a cameo role in Star Trek Into Darkness. If the name rings a bell it is because she played Nancy in the Nightmare on Elm Street horror series back in the 80s. Basically for horror fans she is a member of their hall of fame. The info was part of an interview with Horror News to discuss her documentary "I am Nancy".
Do you have any other projects in the works?
Well, I had the opportunity to play a small part in Star Trek, so I’m looking forward to that. I can’t tell you anything about that, but that was a thrill for me. My husband and I worked on the makeup effects for Star Trek. He designed some of them, so that’s the thing we’re looking forward to most. Hopefully we’ll be working on something else in January. We don’t know what that will be yet, but hopefully it’ll be a really fun job.

Cupcake Returns for Trek Sequel

TrekMovie is reporting that Jason Matthew Smith will return to the role of "Cupcake", the nickname Kirk gave him in the last movie when they met again on the Enterprise after the initial meeting in the bar fight sequence. The character is a security officer on the Enterprise who mostly recently appeared in Star Trek #8 comic. I guess this might have needed a spoiler warning but to me casting news isn't spoilers. The story and what those characters will be doing is and in this case we know next to nothing.

Thor's Joseph Gatt Cast in Star Trek Sequel

Things continue to ramp up to Thursday's start date for Star Trek 2 (or 12) with yet another casting announcement. Joseph Gatt will join the film in an unknown role but considering his role as the frost giant Grundroth in Thor, I suspect it will likely be a villain alien. He looks like he might make for one massive Klingon or an Orion pirate.

Doctor Who Actor Finds Wife for Trek Sequel

Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Nazneen Contractor will play the wife to Doctor Who's Noel Clarke in the Star Trek sequel that will start principle photography. The lovely Nazneen Contractor is probably most known in the States in the states for season 8 of 24. Exactly how much time these will have on screen is unknown but I am thinking these are minor speaking roles used to help setup the story much like the Kirk family was used in the first movie.

Sherlock and Doctor Who Companion Join Star Trek Sequel

I am seriously starting to think that JJ Abrams and company are as huge geeks as I am as they have tapped two BBC stars to join the cast of Star Trek 12. TrekMovie is reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch has been tapped to play a villain while Variety reports that Noel Clarke will play a "family man with a wife and young daughter."

Sci-fi and TV geeks will know Benedict Cumberbatch from his brilliant star making turn as Sherlock Holmes in BBC's Sherlock (now airing its second season, must see TV) and also cast as Smaug The Dragon in The Hobbit films. Noel Clarke played Mickey Smith in Doctor Who when it returned to the airwaves as the boyfriend of companion Billie Piper (Rose Tyler), occasionally joining them on their adventures kicking off the trio dynamic that has become the norm for the series.

AICN is guessing Cumberbatch has been cast as Harry Mudd. I dearly hope that theory is wrong as it would waste the actor and the character barely holds up in the series much less as a main villain in a big budget film. Could he be Bencio Del Toro's replacement as rumored role of Khan considering they both have the same physical attributes of height and shape?

Star Trek Sequel: Pike In, Khan Out, Orginial Cast Not Invited, and Post Converstion 3D

The last several months (really years) has been one long dry spell of useful news on the Star Trek sequel front. Suddenly today multiple pieces of information has come out that might be of interest to fans such as a new cast member, no TOS cast invited, Khan reportedly out (again), and Trek will not film in real 3D.

To start, it looks like Captain Pike will return. Sequel writer Bob Orci posted on TrekMovie.com "Spoiler alert! We wrote a part for Greenwood. Let us hope he says "Yes!". No additional details but Bruce Greenwood has indicated he is up for doing the sequel but would prefer not to be stuck in the wheelchair.

Edgar Ramirez Replacing Del Toro in Star Trek?

Edgar RamirezJordi MollaVariety is reporting that Edgar Ramirez (Vantage Point, left pic) is the current front runner to replace Benicio Del Toro in the Star Trek sequel with Jordi Molla (Colombiana, right pic) also in the running. It seems whatever the villain role is for, it requires a latin male. Ricardo Montalban, who orginiated the role of Khan and reprised it for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, was from Mexico so definitely a plus in the Khan column. At this point, based on what I am reading, entertainment blogs and fandom in general have settled on Khan being the big bad of the Star Trek sequel. If Khan isn't the big bad, JJ Abrams and Paramount needs to seriousily consider revealing what the role is for as anything other than Khan will be viewed as a disappointment the more this rumor is allowed to fester.

Benicio Del Toro Out; Khan Back In for Trek Sequel?

NY Magazine's Vulture blog reports that Benicio Del Toro will not be playing the big bad of the Star Trek sequel. It seems contract negotiations fell through last Wednesday due terms of payment. This brings up a few questions. Does this mean Peter Weller is his replacement or doing a different role? Does this mean that Khan is back in play as the film's big bad?

This past Friday news broke that Khan was confirmed by various sources as the bad guy of the film but this was shortly shot down by J.J. Abrams with a short "not true" statement. However, Abrams loves his secrets. He doesn't lie to fans or reporters but he will either go with a non-answer or an answer that can be interpreted in different ways. In this case, it could be "not true" to Del Toro playing Khan instead of "not true" to Khan being in the film. As usual time will tell.

I think the production dodged a bullet with Benicio Del Toro backing out of the film. Based on his role choices during his career, the world of sci-fi would be an ugly fit. At the very least I seriously doubt he would be able to embrace Trekkies and anything associated with fandom. As for Khan, I still maintain that the Trek "Supreme Court" of Abrams and the writers are going to want to strike out in their own direction and try to create an original story that may have little easter eggs to past Trek stories but not rely completely on it like a Khan story would.

Peter Weller Joins Cast of Star Trek Sequel

Deadline is reporting that Peter Weller (Robocop, 24) has joined the cast of the Star Trek sequel in "a principal role but one they would not specify." The news was confirmed by Weller's PR reps making him the first official new cast member for the sequel. Alice Eve and Benicio Del Toro are likely to join the cast but both are considered to be in the negotiating phase.

Alice Eve Up for Star Trek Role

The Hollywood Reporter posts that Alice Eve (Entourage, Sex and the City 2) is up for a "big role" in Star Trek 2 that is currently in pre-production for a rumored January start date. There is no information on what the role is but for someone reason as soon as I saw a picture of her, "Yeoman Janice Rand" popped into my head.

Del Toro Discussions Confirmed, Giacchino Returns

Star Trek 12 (or 2) now has an official release date of May 17th, 2013 so now things can turn to other details like who is being cast and who else might be returning. A recent rumor on that front was that Benicio Del Toro was picked by director JJ Abrams to play the main villain of the film. That has not been confirmed by the man himself in a quick interview with MTV while promoting the home release of Super 8. Abrams is made sure to point out (video below) that the casting of Del Toro is not a done deal, just that they are "in discussions" with the actor. While at the same event he also told NY Magazine, "...we cannot in any way rely on the first Star Trek. We can't think, Okay, we've got it in the bag, everyone loves these characters. We have to start over in a way."

On a related note, the composer of the score for the first Star Trek film (main themes above), Michael Giacchino has told Coming Soon that, "Yes, I'll be back [to score Star Trek 2]. I'll be there just as soon as they finish it." This isn't really a surprise as Giacchino has long been Abrams go to composer for films he is either directing or producing including Mission: Impossible films, Super 8 and more.

Benicio Del Toro for Star Trek 2 Villain

Its seems that JJ Abrams love of secrets is already in full bloom when it comes to Star Trek 2. No news on a finished script, when principle photography begin, or even when the film will be released. Yet it seems casting is in full swing as Variety reports that Abrams has found his "big bad" for the film.

Sources close to the project tell Variety that Benicio Del Toro is expected to be offered the part, possibly before the weekend is out. Insiders say Del Toro has met with Abrams but, in an effort to keep the role a secret, still doesn't know exactly what it is. Par and Skydance had no comment on the casting process.

Variety tends to not publish unless the news is all but confirmed so have to take this news seriously. This will be an unusual choice for Del Toro who is more known for very serious, Oscar bait type films like The Usual Suspects and Traffic. Choosing to do what will likely a 2013 Summer tent pole movie is not the norm for this actor. Actually looking at his IMDB profile, he has never done such a thing. The closest he has even got to sci-fi is "The Wolfman". Personally I have never been much of a fan of the actor so hoping he decides to pass.

Hanks up for Star Trek 12 Role

In an amusing guest appearance on BBC One's The Graham Norton Show, Tom Hanks and Simon Pegg talked about Star Trek and briefly quizzed each other. The news of note is the Academy Award winning actor expressed a wiliness to appear in the movie, suggesting the role of a "peaceful Romulan." While it is doubtful this will ever occur, it is always nice the know that Hanks is a proud Trekkie. Hanks joins Rosario Dawson, James McAvoy, Paul Giammatti, and Rachel Weisz in expressing interest in a role for the sequel. (via TrekMovie)

Rachel Weisz Interested in Star Trek Sequel

Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz has expressed interest in a role in the sequel to Abrams' Star Trek in an interview with Collider to promote her movie Agora. The interview covers more than just Trek, below is just the Trek related portion. As a fan of the lovely Rachel Weisz, I definitely like the idea but I don't see it happening.
A lot of Collider readers first discovered you in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. Would you go back to big visual effects movies again?
RW: Yeah! Yeah! Definitely! Definitely!

Anything potentially on the horizon that you’re looking at, you’re like, “You know what? I would love to do that series.” Like all these different comic book adaptations that are happening. That you go-
RW: Yeah. You know what? I loved Star Trek. I mean, I couldn’t even believe how great, I meant to write (Star Trek director) J.J. Abrams a letter. I haven’t written it yet, though. I just thought- Didn’t you think it was tremendous?
RW: I just thought it was tremendous.
RW: And I’m not a Trekkie. I mean, (Weisz’s longtime fiancĂ©) Darren (Aronofsky) took me thinking, he says, “You’re gonna hate this.” Cause I didn’t grow up watching Star Trek. I mean, I, Dr. Spock, I mean, I vaguely know. But, I loved it. I absolutely—I thought the acting was just phenomenal. Really, really great. So, yeah! No, I’m totally open to doing a big, big blockbuster.

Would you enter in and put your name in the hat for the Star Trek sequel?
RW: Me? I would LOVE to be in the Star Trek sequel! Yeah! I would love to! I better write that letter to J.J.
RW: Yeah, I would love to. No, I was really, wildly impressed by that. I thought it was an incredible piece of work. Yeah. It just had such a freshness and the acting was, the acting blew me away.

Wil Wheaton's Trek Cameo

It turns out that Wil Wheaton did have a cameo in the recent Star Trek film, just not in a way expected. Rather then having an onscreen role, Star Trek: The Next Generation's Wesley Crusher provided voice work for the various Romulan crew members on Nero's ship.

From Wheaton's blog:
I met JJ at an ADR stage a few days later, where he told me the entire plot of the movie (and, for the record, hearing JJ Freakin' Abrams tell you the plot of his Star Trek is even more awesome than you'd expect) and showed me some of the scenes that I'd be dubbing. I ended up providing voices for all the Romulans on Nero's ship, including the guy who tells him that "it's time" at the very beginning of the movie. (Yeah, how cool is that?)

Matt Damon As Kirk?

In an interview (don't know original source), JJ Abrams apparently offered the role of James T. Kirk to Matt Damon.
"I actually approached Matt and we had some discussions, but everything happens for a reason. On the one hand, it would have been great to work with Matt - but at the end of the day, it was such a better move to cast the movie with unknowns…. It is fun to discover the stars of tomorrow, but even more so, just like with the first Star Wars, you didn’t know who those people were when you saw the movie. You believed that guy was Luke Skywalker. You didn’t recognize him from six other movies. You bought into who this guy was. It is a slippery slope when you cast any actor that is somewhat known. We weren’t beholden to any fame meter.”

"Cadet" Tania Gunadi Interview

IGN spoke briefly with actress Tania Gunadi (Aaron Stone) about her small role in Star Trek where she plays a Starfleet Academy Cadet. Thanks to Brian for the link.
IGN: can you talk at all about your role in Star Trek?
Gunadi: Well, I did sign a contract where I can't say anything! But I think it's okay to say that I am playing a Starfleet Cadet.

IGN: Right. I saw that listed on imdb.
Gunadi: Yeah. It's a small role. I worked for three days and they were shooting for about four months. But I will say that I am an alien. I'm one of the aliens. I must say that the makeup took about four or five hours to put on and two hours to take off – to remove. It's pretty cool, but I can't tell you what the alien is.

IGN: What was it like working on a such a large production?
Gunadi: It was amazing. J.J. Abrams is so nice. He's so nice and everyone was so cool. They make sure you can breathe [under the makeup] and they take care of you. No one was stuck up or anything. And the food was so good! [Laughs] And I love food! There was lots of green screen.

Enterprise Computer Voice Cast

Variety is reporting that the voice of the Enterprise computer has been cast. For decades now the voice through all four series and the movies has been the wife of Gene Roddenberry, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry. Well, relived fans will be glad to know the tradition continues as she will reprise the role for the upcoming Star Trek movie.
